Den lille havfrue (Condensed)
by Hans Christian Andersen (first published in 1837)
Once upon a time, in the depths of the sea, there lived a young mermaid named Ariel. She had a beautiful voice and was fascinated by the world above the waves. She longed to explore the human world, where she believed happiness awaited her.
One day, Ariel caught a glimpse of a handsome prince named Eric aboard a ship. She fell in love with him instantly. Determined to be with Eric, she made a daring deal with the sea witch, Ursula. Ariel traded her voice for a pair of legs, knowing that she would lose her voice forever if she failed to make the prince fall in love with her.
As a human, Ariel faced numerous challenges. She struggled to adapt to her new legs and found it difficult to communicate without her voice. Despite these obstacles, she managed to capture Eric's attention, and they formed a bond. However, Ursula, jealous of Ariel's happiness, used her dark magic to deceive Eric into believing that she was the one who saved him from drowning.
Heartbroken, Ariel realized the price she had paid for her desires. With the help of her friends and her father, King Triton, she confronted Ursula and defeated her. As a result, Ariel regained her voice and returned to her mermaid form.
Although she had lost her chance to be with Eric, Ariel had learned a valuable lesson. She discovered that true love is not based on appearances or sacrifices but on genuine connection and understanding. She realized that changing who she was for someone else wasn't the path to happiness.
Returning to the sea, Ariel shared her newfound wisdom with her family and friends. She became an advocate for acceptance and embracing one's true self. Ariel understood that her voice was a precious gift, not just for singing but also for expressing her thoughts and feelings.
